Hawk boys hang tough before bowing out

MONROE — The season came to an end for the South Hamilton boys here Monday night.

But not without a fight.

Despite falling twice to PCM by lopsided scores during the regular season, the Hawks gave the Mustangs everything they could handle before coming up short, 57-50, in a Class 2A, District 5 affair.

Jackson Olmstead scored a team-high 27 points, while Sam Koehnk and Luke Martensen each added seven. Ben Swenson finished with six and Kaden Dean chipped in four.

South Hamilton and PCM were tied at 50-all with 92 seconds remaining in the game, but the Mustangs finished on a 7-0 run.

During Heart of Iowa Conference action earlier this year, PCM won both games by scores of 79-45 and 52-23.

“Could not be more proud of the boys,” South Hamilton head coach Jay Heeren said. “They have it all they had, played together and helped each other rebound from the mistakes that were made.”

Olmstead scored 16 in the opening half, helping South Hamilton erase an early 10-point deficit.

“We had a great second quarter to get back in it, but had trouble scoring to start the third,” Heeren said. “The boys fought back to get it down to three, but PCM made free throws as we had to foul to try and get back in it.”

The contest marked the finale for seniors Koehnk, Jose Babcock and Martensen.

“Hardest part is saying good bye to Luke, Sam and Jose,” Heeren said. “It shows a lot of courage to come back out after a rough year and tough start to this season, and those three never gave up and they deserve a lot of respect.”

PCM (14-8) now faces Van Meter (13-8) on Thursday.

Starting at $3.46/week.
