Gavin Wynkoop and Cody Elliott will finish their high school wrestling careers on the big stage.

Together.

The Webster City seniors punched their state tickets in their home gym on Saturday.

Wynkoop (26-13) claimed the 144-pound district championship, and Elliott (29-10) was the 215-pound runner up.

Wynkoop cruised into the semifinals with a fall in 1:37 over Travis Messer of Forest City. In the semifinals, he earned an 18-3 tech fall in 5:03 over Colson Schafer of Eagle Grove.

Wynkoop then claimed the championship with a tight 7-3 decision over Cannen Beaumont of Denver.

“Gavin stepped up,” said WCHS head coach Drake Doolittle. “He showed his potential and what he is capable of. We’ve been waiting to see that out of him.

“Gavin put on a show.”

Elliott will make his second straight state trip after picking up three wins on the day. He earned a 13-1 major decision over Bryant Bridges of Forest City in the quarterfinals, then blanked Jack Hackman of Clear Lake 11-0 in the semis.

The Lynx senior lost by fall in 45 seconds to Cody Koepke of Denver for district gold.

Elliott then clinched his state spot by pinning Christian Schild of Eagle Grove in 3:34.

“Cody has obviously been in this position before,” Doolittle said. “He wanted to get back to state after last year.

“(In 2025), he took a step to get to state. Now, he has his eyes on making the podium.”

Ty Bingham (113), Dawson Bertran (138), and Ridge Berninghaus (157) all finished third, just missing a state spot for Webster City.

Bingham won his third-place match, beating Reid Hendrickson of Garner-Hayfield-Ventura, 10-4. Bingham didn’t have a chance to wrestle back.

Bertran won his bronze-medal match, beating Tyler Fox of Forest City, 18-7. Bertran didn’t get a true second.

Berninghaus won a third-place match by medical forfeit. He didn’t get a chance to wrestle back.

“For the most part, all of our guys were ready to go,” said Doolittle. “It was the best day of wrestling all year. It was great to see the seniors punch state tickets and others finish strong.”

Class 2A state tournament action will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.

Starting at $3.46/week.
