The South Hamilton girls basketball team lost a tight 38-36 contest to Nevada on Friday.
Eight different players reached the scoring column for the Hawks (6-7 overall).
“Tough loss to a team that I think we are pretty evenly-matched with,” said South Hamilton girls coach Mark Henderson. “They made things difficult for us, but we also didn’t help ourselves out with some silly turnovers and sloppy execution.
“We had a three-point lead with a minute and a half left, but Nevada made more plays than us to close out the game and we came up just a bit short.”
Freshman Signe Swenson led the way with nine points and Emma Lammers had seven.
Both Isabel Swenson and Kaylen Trask had five points. Tessa Skartvedt added four, as did Allie Neuberger.
“I was really proud of our girls’ efforts,” Henderson said. “We talked before the game about how hard Nevada works as a team and we wanted to out-work them.
“I thought our kids were up to that challenge and really gave it their all. Unfortunately we needed a couple more shots to fall, but it wasn’t in the cards for us.”
The South Hamilton boys (0-13) lost to Nevada (10-1) by a final of 60-32.
Sam Koehnk and Jackson Olmstead paced the Hawks with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Benjamin Swenson, Luke Martensen and King Brown had three points each.
“The effort and attitude of these young men just keeps getting better and better as we go,” SH boys head coach Jay Heeren said. “Our rebounding has really improved and understanding of what we are trying to do defensively.”
John Nelson led Nevada with with 22 points, while Drake Hinson had 16.
Both South Hamilton squads are back in action on Tuesday at Saydel.
