Lynx boys shake off Charles City
CHARLES CITY — The Webster City boys basketball squad pulled away from Charles City in their first game of the new year on Saturday, posting a 68-55 road victory.
The Lynx (2-2 overall) outscored the Comets (0-5) in the fourth quarter, 25-13, turning a slim lead into a comfortable win.
Junior Coyce Bertran had a career-high 27 points to lead Webster City. Bertran drilled five of his six three-point attempts, and didn’t miss a free throw in six tries.
Bertran also added six rebounds and five steals.
“I thought the kids really played hard,” WCHS head coach Brett Ratcliff said. “You never know what to expect on a Saturday, but the guys really competed.
“Our defensive effort was the difference. And in the fourth quarter, we made just enough plays to stretch the lead and come away with the win.”
Junior Alex Staley (14 points) and senior Jaxon Griffith (11) also reached double figures for the Lynx, who shot 51 percent as a team.
Staley grabbed eight rebounds and came up with four steals, as Webster City finished with 20 total steals. Griffith had five, with Grant Arends and William Ruby contributing three each.
Arends also blocked three shots. Griffith tallied four assists.
The Lynx head to Clear Lake on Tuesday, then return home to square off with Clarion-Goldfield/Dows on Friday. Both varsity boys tilts are slated for 7:30 p.m.
