Lynx experience pockets of success at NCC wrestling meet

HUMBOLDT — The Webster City wrestling team put together a strong showing here Saturday at the North Central Conference Tournament.
Cody Elliott led the way for the Lynx, placing second at 215 pounds. Angel Ramirez, Jaysen Vankham and Eli Estlund all placed third, helping Webster City finish sixth in the team standings.
Clarion-Goldfield/Dows won the team title followed by Algona, Hampton-Dumont/CAL, Humboldt and Clear Lake.
“I was proud of how we competed at the weights we needed to,” WCHS head coach Drake Doolittle said. “We wrestled tough all day and had a lot of guys battle on the backside to earn some hard-fought wins.
“Cody was a big highlight for us,” Doolittle said. “He wrestled extremely well and showed a lot of maturity, making smart decisions in his matches and putting himself in position to win.”
Elliott scored a fall in his first match and earned a 4-2 decision over Maddon Evans of Hampton-Dumont/CAL in the semifinals. He fell to Algona’s Tayten Rummel in the championship match.
Vankham scored a first period fall over Jonny Hayden from Humboldt for bronze at 132 to go along with a consolation semifinal pin in 45 seconds.
Estlund earned back-to-back victories after a loss in the semifinals to score his third at 190, going 3-1 overall for the tournament. He had a fall in the quarterfinals, a decision in the consolation semifinals and pinned Micah Thompson from Charles City in the consolation final in 50 seconds.
Ramirez secured a third at 106 pounds, finishing 2-1 on the day. He scored a 23-8 technical fall in the consolation final over Tyler Friedrich of Algona.
“We got strong performances from Angel, Jaysen and Eli,” Doolittle said. “Those guys continue to get better every day and our coaching staff is excited to see how that growth shows as we head into the final stretch of the season.”
Gavin Wynkoop won his final match at 144, downing Sam Robinson of Iowa Falls-Alden, 5-2 to place fifth. Ridge Berninghaus did the same at 157, securing fifth with a fall over Cayden VanVoorhis from Clear Lake in 3:07.
Ty Bingham, Lincoln Brookshire, Tariq Burton, Andrew Vaughn and Briggs Peppel all finished sixth for Webster City. Peyton Weisberg went 0-2.
