GRIDIRON HONORS
Six Webster City football players capped the season by making the Class 3A, District 1 all-district first-team, the league announced recently.
Along with Cole Nohrenberg, Jaxon Griffith, Aiden Hrnicek, Eli Estlund, Israel Torres and Grant Arends, Nate Beaulieu, Kaleb Hansen, Carter Mickelson and Dawson Bertran were second team selections. Beau Nohrenberg and Cael Alexander made honorable mention.
The Lynx finished the year 3-6 overall and tied for third in the district behind Bishop Heelan and Sioux Center.
Nohrenberg, a senior, was named to the first team as an offensive lineman and also shared the district offensive lineman of the year honors with Humboldt’s Jack Guy.
A three-year starter for the Lynx, Nohrenberg helped pave the way for over 2,000 yards rushing this past season.
“It’s awesome to see Cole recognized as one of the offensive line MVPs,” WCHS head coach Andy Brim said. “Cole has had an awesome career as an offensive linemen for us, as we have rushed for over 8,000 yards the last three years.”
Griffith, also a senior, benefited from Nohrenberg in the trenches, rushing for a team-leading 894 yards with six touchdowns. He also caught nine passes for 145 yards and two more scores.
On defense, Griffith recorded 41.5 tackles and picked off three passes, returning to for scores. He also averaged 25 yards per kickoff return and handled punt return duties.
“Jaxon is a tremendous football player and could have been all-district on either side of the ball,” Brim said. “He is truly a special talent on the field and one of those kids that is able to make plays and make those around him better.”
Hrnicek handled multiple duties for Webster City, throwing for 160 yards and two TDs while rushing for 699 yards and a team-high 13 touchdowns. He had 33.5 tackles on defense.
“I was really happy that Aiden made the first team as the utility player as that is exactly what he is,” Brim said. “He was able o do all the things we needed him to do offensively — run our offense, block and run the ball.”
Estlund joined Nohrenberg along the offensive line, adding 24 tackles on defense with 7.5 for loss and a team-leading three sacks.
“Eli had a great senior year on both sides of the ball,” Brim said. “Not many kids would be able to play both ways on the line of scrimmage like Eli did and still be able to make the positive impact that he did.”
Torres was tabbed specialist of the year within the district after going 21-for-24 on extra-point attempts with a made field goal. He had 25 touchbacks and averaged 33 yards per punt.
“What an honor for Israel,” Brim said. “Having him handle the kickoffs was a huge asset to our team.”
Arends made the first team on defense at utility as he recorded 28 tackles with 7.5 for loss, a sack, forced and recovered a fumble, and picked off a pass.
“Grant started varsity for the first time this season and continued to improve throughout the year,” Brim said. “He became someone that could do a lot of different things on the defensive side of the ball.”
Hansen ran for 562 yard and scored four touchdowns, as Beaulieu helped block for him along the offensive line. Mickelson tallied 21.5 tackles and recovered two fumbles, Bertran had 14.5 tackles with 3.5 for loss and two fumble recoveries while Alexander had 13.5 tackles, including 3.5 for loss.
“I was really happy that Kaleb landed on the second-team,” Brim said. “As a team, we led the district in rushing due to the balance of all three backs and Kaleb was a huge part of that. Nate was a great center, as he put a lot of time into making himself better over the offseason.
“Carter had his season cut short and only played in two district games. Had it not been for that, he would have been a first team selection. Dawson made the switch to nose halfway through and really filled a need.
“Beau spent his senior year injured but was able to return for the final two weeks, making an immediate impact, and Cael is another senior that played varsity for the first time and was a reliable defensive lineman.”
