Webster City runs at SQ meet

GILBERT — The Webster City cross country team ended the season here Wednesday at a Class 3A state qualifier.

The Lynx were led by Justin Callahan, as he placed 19th overall.

Callahan had a time of 16:53, helping Webster City finish eighth overall.

The Top-3 teams and first 15 individuals earned bids to the state cross country meet, which takes place Friday, Oct. 31 in Fort Dodge from Lakeside Golf Course at Kennedy Park.

Aidan Wardell was next in line for the Lynx, as he placed 37th overall in 18:00. Gabe Thumma was 42nd in 18:08, Jack Barner finished 48th in 18:21, Kaleb Draeger was 52nd in 18:33, Arlen Lake finished 70th in 19:12 and Kyzer Zinnel was 73rd in 19:18.

“Justin ran a huge PR and just missed state,” WCHS head coach Derek Turner said. “The meet was ran on the Iowa State course, which is a fast course, allowing us to set several big PRs.”

For the Webster City girls, they finished 11th overall behind Izzy Grossoehme, who was 22nd in 20:22. She broke her own school record with the performance.

Marlene Saavedra Mendoza was the next Lynx runner, placing 67th overall with a time of 23:49. Mckenna Buakham finished 73rd (24:22), Haedyn Soesbee was 75th (24:51), Julia Griep placed 78th (25:09), Rubi Andrade-Murillo was 80th (26:21) and Abby Peterson finished 81st (26:59).

On the boys side, Gilbert, Des Moines Christian and Bondurant-Farrar advanced to state, as Caleb Ten Pas of Des Moines Christian was the race winner. For the girls, Des Moines Christian, Gilbert and Winterset moved on, with Elyse Erzen of Des Moines Christian placing first.

Seniors for Webster City included Callahan, Lake, Thumma, Zinnel, Ben Youngdale, Griep, Isabelle McNiel and Heidi Mendoza.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the effort shown by both of our squads,” Turner said. “They left it all out there and we ran our best when it mattered the most.

“We will miss our seniors and their guidance and continuations on both of our squads.”
