ALGONA — The Webster City cross country teams battled a strong field and warmer than usual conditions here Monday at the Algona Invitational.

Justin Callahan had the highest individual finish for the Lynx, leading the boys by placing 11th overall.

Callahan, a senior, clocked a time of 17:58, as Mason City’s Henry Hansen was the race winner in 15:53.

Webster City placed seventh in the boys team standings, as Forest City was first followed by Clear Lake, Spencer, Algona and Mason City rounding out the Top-5.

“Great night,” WCHS head coach Derek Turner said. “I’m really proud of how we competed, particularly in the second and third miles of our races.

“A lot of kids made tons of moves in the back-half of the race, which is something we have struggled with in the past.”

Jack Barner finished 34th overall, Gabe Thumma was 43rd, Aidan Wardell placed 49th, Kyzer Zinnel was 65th, Kaleb Draeger finished 67th and Arlen Lake was 72nd.

Izzy Grossoehme paced the Lynx girls, as the junior was 31st in 23:10. Mckenna Buakham finished 69th, Marlene Saavedra Mendoza was 73rd, Julia Griep 74th and Rubi Andrade-Murillo 77th.

Brogan Evans of Mason City won the race crown in 19:54, leading the Riverhawks to a team title overall. Forest City was second, Humboldt third, Clear Lake fourth, Spencer fifth and Webster City in 10th.

For the junior varsity, Daniel Murillo-Delfino was 12th, Colten Betts finished 37th, Tariq Burton was 47th and Leland Eggers 49th. Jessica Utera led the girls, finishing 39th followed by Abby Peterson in 49th and Heidi Mendoza in 55th.

Next action for the Lynx will be on Thursday at the Hampton-Dumont/CAL Invitational.
