South Hamilton looking for first victory
JEWELL — The South Hamilton football team will get one more crack at securing a victory this year.
The Hawks have added a ninth game with Eagle Grove after both were eliminated from postseason contention.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. here Friday night.
South Hamilton has been close in recent weeks, playing both Pocahontas Area and East Sac County to within 10 points or less.
Sophomore Wyatt Gelder has continued the run of successful backs, rushing for 1,221 yards and 14 touchdowns on 171 carries. His rushing total currently ranked No. 1 in Class 1A.
Maddux Becker has 374 yards on the ground and Jose Babcock another 364 with three touchdowns.
The Hawk defense is anchored by Benjamin Swenson, Brody Harris and Gelder. Swenson, a sophomore, has 42.5 tackles with 6.5 for loss and 4.5 sacks, Harris, a senior, has 39.5 tackles and Gelder has 34.
Eagle Grove features a balanced rushing attack led by Trenton Robinson, as the junior has rushed for 722 yards and scored five TDs. Adrian Whipple has 572 yards passing and 236 yards rushing with a team-high seven scores while Leelan Spencer has 437 yards on the ground.
Gavin Pedersen is the top target for Whipple, as he has 326 yards and five TDs on 12 receptions.
Since 2010, South Hamilton and Eagle Grove have met 10 times, with the Hawks winning the last eight, including a 60-14 victory in 2022.
