Ranked Heelan defeats Lynx
SIOUX CITY — The Webster City football team couldn’t hold off No. 4 (Class 3A) Sioux City Heelan on Friday night, falling by a final of 28-6.
The Crusaders (6-1 overall, 3-0 in the district) used a pair of Noah Conley touchdown passes to get past the resilent Lynx (2-5, 1-2).
Jaxon Griffith caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Aiden Hrnicek for the lone Webster City score. Griffith also ran 21 times for 73 yards.
Hrnicek added 52 yards on the ground and Kaleb Hansen had 33. Grant Arends recorded a tackle for loss on defense with a forced fumble and fumble recovery, and Eli Estlund tallied four tackles.
The Lynx defense held University of Iowa commit Kasen Thomas in check, as he rushed for just 44 yards on eight carries with a touchdown. Conley was just 6 of 17 passing for 129 yards.
“Heelan is another great football team,” WCHS head coach Andy Brim said. “The best 3A football in the state is being played in northwest Iowa right now.”
Heelan’s lone loss this year came to 5A-ranked Sioux City East, 42-41 in double overtime.
“The outcome isn’t what we want, but our kids battle for 48 minutes every week,” Brim said. “I’d put the effort these kids play with every Friday up against anybody.”
“Not one time this year have we had one kid quit on a play and I’m extremely proud of that. I know that attitude will help them be great people beyond the football field.”
Webster City returns home to host Algona this Friday night.
