The Webster City volleyball squad got off to a quick start in their postseason opener at home on Tuesday.
Playing in a Class 4A regional opener, the Lynx (21-13 overall) knocked off Mason City (8-25) in four sets.
Webster City won the first two games, 25-17 and 25-21. The Riverhawks came back with a 25-21 win in Game 3, but the Lynx responded and closed it out with a 25-10 victory.
“It was good to see the girls come out strong and aggressive,” said WCHS head coach Jess Howard. “We were kind of inconsistent in Games 2 and 3, but we were able to bounce back in Game 4 and finish the job.”
Tristyn Wright had another big night attacking for the Lynx, going 40-for-45 with 16 kills. Ashlee Nydegger was 14-for-14 attacking with seven kills.
Avery Poppen was 17 of 20 with four kills. Jaylyn Bahrenfuss added five kills, while Avery Poppen, Evie Davis and Lovie Pruismann had four each.
Davis also tallied six blocks.
Morgan Hackbarth led the way in digs with 29. Pruismann had 13 digs, while Alivia Burns had seven.
Wright and Hailey Brim had six each.
Pruismann dished out 25 assists.
Nydegger and Hackbarth with perfect at the service line in 20 and 13 attempts, respectively, with one ace each. Pruismann was also perfect in eight tries.
Burns was 23-for-25 serving, and Briley VanDeer went 12 of 13.
“I think we did a good job distributing the ball all over the court,” Howard said. “Defensivley, the back row and kept the ball in play to run our offense.
“Lovie got the ball into the right hands.”
The Lynx will travel to Waverly-Shell Rock on Thursday. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
The Go-Hawks (19-20) have lost three straight and four of their last five matches.
“They (W-SR) are going to be a consistent team and they are strong on defense,” Howard said. “Their offense is solid. We need to stay consistent and poised — ready to go from the beginning.”
