JEWELL — The South Hamilton football team held district champion Manson Northwest Webster in check for the first 12 minutes.
A big 21-point second quarter by the Cougars helped them complete a perfect run through the league slate, though, as they earned a 41-12 victory over the Hawks.
“At the end of the first quarter, we were down only two points,” South Hamilton head coach Paul Skartvedt said. “Our kids played good, sound football up to that point.
“We had some mistakes in the second that translated to some touchdowns for Manson Northwest Webster and that started to put the game away for them.”
Wyatt Gelder continued his excellent sophomore campaign, running 19 times for 194 yards with two touchdowns. Jose Babcock added 62 yards rushing, and Maddux Becker had 37.
“We had a really good offensive night other than the fumbles,” Skartvedt said. “Our offensive line and tight ends blocked really well for Wyatt, who had another big game.”
On defense, Becker and Benjamin Swenson each had 1.5 quarterback sacks. Brody Harris made nine tackles and Kaden Dean 8.5.
Harris also recovered a fumble that he forced, and Kash Northrop picked off a pass.
South Hamilton picked up an extra game to close the regular season, as the Hawks will now host Eagle Grove this coming Friday night.
