Webster City faces Gilbert for Homecoming
The Webster City football team looks to regain momentum with the start of district play on the horizon when they host sixth-rated (Class 4A) Gilbert for Homecoming here Friday night.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Lynx Field.
After being edged by No. 5 (4A) Fort Dodge, 7-6, two weeks ago, Webster City 1-2 overall) fell to second-ranked (3A) Clear Lake last Friday, 47-7. That was the first road trip of the year for WCHS and second-year head coach Andy Brim.
The Lynx never got on track, falling behind 28-0 at the half to their conference rivals. Jaxon Griffith got Webster City on the board with a fourth quarter touchdown run, finishing with 62 yards.
Griffith has 188 yards on the ground this year and three total TDs, as Aiden Hrnicek leads with 198 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Griffith is also the top tackler, recording 20 stops with two for loss and an interception.
Gilbert (3-0) has scored two lopsided wins in a row since escaping vs. Carroll in the opener, blasting Mason City and Boone. Cameron Cantonwine, who was the starting quarterback at Ames last year, has rushed for 366 yards and four touchdowns.
Ethan Rash has 56 yards passing and 208 yards on the ground with five TDs. Cantonwine is also the leading tackler with 18 stops including three for loss.
Webster City and Gilbert have not met since 2020, when the Lynx scored a 54-13 victory. They have won four in a row and nine of 11 in the series versus the Tigers since 2010.
