South Hamilton earns CGD crown

The South Hamilton volleyball squad capped a frantic first week of volleyball action by capturing the team title at the Clarion-Goldfield/Dows Tournament on Saturday.

The Hawks (5-5 overall) reeled off victories over Eagle Grove (13-21, 21-11, 15-13), North Butler (22-24, 21-12, 15-10), C-G/D (21-13, 12-21, 15-9) and Clear Lake (21-17, 23-21). Their lone loss was to Estherville-Lincoln Central (21-15, 21-16).

“I could see the girls gain confidence and improve throughout the week,” South Hamilton head coach Shannon Skartvedt said. “We (faced) some very good opponents. Now we just need to keep some of that momentum going as we head into conference play.”

Earlier in the week, the Hawks defeated Central Springs (21-18 and 21-14) but dropped matches to Webster City (21-8, 21-17) and Roland-Story (21-13, 21-8) at the “Early Bird” quad hosted by R-S. On Thursday, South Hamilton fell to South Hardin (25-15, 25-15).

Junior Tessa Skartvedt has recorded 57 kills already this year, with seniors Fiona Rott (20) and Sara Scheller (19) next in line. Senior Claire Hewitt has 65 assists, with junior Aliya Erickson adding 41.

Skartvedt’s count ranks her among the Top-10 in Class 2A so far.

Emma Lammers has been the digs leader to date with 70, which also places her in 2A’s Top-10. Senior Daytona Ferrie (13 blocks) and Scheller (11) have been other defensive standouts.

Ferrie (15), Rott (13), Skartvedt (13) and junior Riah Van De Pol (13) have all reached double digits in service aces.

The Hawks are off until Saturday, when they head to the South Central Calhoun Early Bird in Lake City.

Starting at $3.46/week.
