Lynx go to Humboldt for district opener

HUMBOLDT — Following a tough run through non-district play, the Webster City football team faces another stern test on Friday night.

The Lynx begin Class 3A, District 1 action with North Central Conference rival Humboldt at Mason Maach Field.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Webster City (1-3 overall, 0-0 in the district) was put to the test with games against 4A ranked Fort Dodge and Gilbert, along with a rated 3A foe in Clear Lake after opening the season with a 42-8 victory vs. Iowa Falls-Alden.

The combined records of those four opponents sits at 14-2.

Jaxon Griffith, Kaleb Hansen and Aiden Hrnicek are all closing in on 300 yards rushing, as Griffith leads with 298. Hansen is right behind at 295 yards on the ground, and Hrnicek 284 with a team-high four touchdowns.

Griffith has also hauled in five passes for 81 yards and a TD from Hrnicek.

On defense, Griffith has a team-leading 23 tackles followed by Coyce Bertran, Grant Arends, Hrnicek and Carter Mickelson. Bertran, Arends and Griffith each have an interception.

Humboldt (2-2, 0-0) was the state runner-up in 3A a season ago. They topped Spencer, fell to Clear Lake and Carroll, and downed Ballard on the road last Friday night.

Jackson Flaherty has moved into the starting quarterback role for the Wildcats, completing 61 percent of his passes for 680 yards and eight touchdowns while adding 225 yards and two scores with his legs.

Cash McIntire has 350 yards rushing and six TDs, hauling in eight passes for 138 yards and another score. Valley Davis has a team-high 14 receptions for 220 yards and three scores.

Jaxson Kirchhoff and Chase Flaherty each have two touchdown catches.

Overall, Webster City leads the series, 10-5, since 2010, but Humboldt has won three of the last four. That run includes a 28-14 victory last season.
