Webster City impressive in victory over Iowa Falls-Alden
The Webster City girls tennis team opened North Central Conference play here Tuesday with a convincing 7-2 win over Iowa Falls-Alden.
Allie Severe, Gabbie Sebert, Natalie Segar, Sylvia Otteros and Olivia Bergman were all singles winners. Severe pulled out a win in a super-tiebreaker at the No. 1 position for the Lynx over Jordyn Carpenter.
Sebert, Segar, Otteros and Bergman all won in straight sets.
“It’s always good to start the NCC season off with a win, especially against a team like Iowa Falls-Alden that has traditionally been pretty solid,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “I was impressed with the athletes they had out there, as a lot of their girls played really well. I liked the progress we showed on the courts.
“All of our singles players showed some great progress and improvement from last Friday and I was much happier with our doubles play overall.”
Alivia Burns dropped a tough super-tiebreaker at No. 2 to Isabelle Janssen, 12-10.
In doubles, Severe and Burns, along with Sebert and Segar, were winners. Severe and Burns scored a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot while Sebert and Segar won in a super-tiebreaker, 10-7.
“Allie didn’t have her A-game but she gutted through and found a way to win,” Fisher said. “Alivia really grinded in her match. Gabbie continues to gain confidence and is showing she can dictated points now more than she has in the past, as is Natalie. She’s been a pleasant surprise.
“Sylvia continues to show a real consistency in singles, and Olivia has improved so much since her freshman year.”
Webster City heads to Grundy Center for a triangular on Friday with the Spartans and Oelwein.
