Split for Lynx in girls tennis season opener

The Webster City girls tennis team opened play here last Friday with a triangular against Ballard and Dike-New Hartford.

After besting Ballard, 6-3, the Lynx fell to perennial state contender Dike-New Hartford, 7-2.

Sylvia Otteros went 2-0 on the day, earning a pair of wins at the No. 6 singles spot. The doubles team of Allie Severe and Alivia Burns knocked off a returning state medalist from Dike-New Hartford.

“It was exciting to have two great teams up here for two meets to get a lot of tennis in early on,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “Our goal was to improve a bunch over the day, and I thought we did that. These are the kinds of teams that are going to make you pay for any mistakes you make, and it helps you learn and grow.

“It was a good way to start the season.”

Severe, Burns, Gabbie Sebert and Natalie Segar joined her in the victory column vs. Ballard, as did the doubles team of Severe and Burns.

The other win vs. Dike-New Hartford came from Severe and Burns at the top doubles position, as they posted a straight-set win — 6-4, 6-4 — over Addy Joslin and Lauren Muller, who placed fourth in Class 1A at state a year ago.

Otteros earned her victory vs. Taraya Johnson with a super-tiebreaker victory after splitting the first two sets, 10-5. Segar and Otteros went to a super-tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles, coming up short.

“Sylvia had a really nice day,” Fisher said. “She made some great adjustments in coming back to win from a set down.”

The Lynx return to action on Tuesday when they host Iowa Falls-Alden. The meet starts at 10 a.m.

Starting at $3.46/week.
