Split for Lynx girls in tennis
GRUNDY CENTER — The Webster City girls tennis team split a triangular here last Friday with Grundy Center and Oelwein.
After falling to the host Spartans, 5-4, the Lynx swept singles to defeat Oelwein, 6-0.
Allie Severe, Alivia Burns and Gabbie Sebert each went 2-0 on the day, as the trio earned wins at the Top-3 singles positions. Severe and Burns scored a doubles victory vs. Grundy Center.
“Grundy Center has really worked to turn their program around and they have some really good athletes out there,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “They definitely pushed us to get better. I thought it was a good example of the mix of players that we have right now.
“We have veterans who are fine-tuning more advanced tactics and strokes, and also players on varsity for the first time who are developing confidence and basic tactics. It’s fun to watch both grow together.”
In the win over Oelwein, Natalie Segar, Sylvia Otteros and Olivia Bergman added singles triumphs for Webster City.
“I was really impressed with Allie,” Fisher said. “She had to battle early against Grundy Center but was able to get in a rhythm against a solid player. That brought her into her match with Oelwein where she didn’t give up a single point.
“Alivia showed some grit in her first match and made nice adjustments, Gabbie had two nice wins and Natalie Sylvia and Olivia all bounced back in their second matches.”
