Lynx take care of Clear Lake
CLEAR LAKE — The Webster City girls tennis team got back on track here Tuesday with a 6-3 victory over Clear Lake.
Allie Severe, Alivia Burns, Gabbie Sebert, Sylvia Otteros and Olivia Bergman gave the Lynx control of the North Central Conference dual by taking five of the six singles matches.
In doubles, Severe and Burns secured the win with a convincing 7-5, 6-1 win at the No. 1 position over Makayla Martin and Lauryn Coleman.
“It is always nice to come out with an NCC win,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “Had to grind at some spots, but also had some dominant showings. It’s one of those interesting things with tennis, as it’s a team sport, but it’s also an individual sport.
“I thought we had great second sets in singles as a group.”
Severe — playing No. 1 vs. Martin — and Sebert — at No. 3 vs. Coleman — won their singles matches with a third-set super-tiebreaker win.
“It was good to see Allie get through a tough match where maybe she didn’t have her best tennis,” Fisher said. “I thought Alivia and Sylvia both played dominant matches, and Gabbie had a nice come from behind win as she continues to get more comfortable with how we want her to play.”
Bergman and Paisyn Bare lost a tough super-tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles, battling back to win the second set, 6-4, before falling, 10-8.
“Doubles continue to be a work in progress,” Fisher said. “Olivia and Paisyn gave us our fourth combo at No. 3 doubles and looked to have a chance at the win, but got a bit tight and missed some shots.
“But I saw good growth in doubles and a lot of things we an learn from.”
Junior varsity winners for Webster City included Ash Tinoco and Alivia Hector.
Webster City heads to Boone on Friday for an invitational from McHose Park with the host Toreadors, Des Moines Lincoln and Council Bluffs St. Albert. Action begins at 10 a.m.
