Lynx open with 2-1 mark at Roland-Story

STORY CITY — The Webster City volleyball team kicked off the 2025 season by winning two of three matches here Monday at the Roland-Story Early Bird quadrangular.

After picking up wins over Central Springs and South Hamilton, the Lynx dropped a tight two-setter to No. 7 (Class 3A) Roland-Story.

Webster City (2-1 overall) topped Central Springs, 21-15, 18-21, 15-8; bested South Hamilton, 21-8, 21-17; and fell to the Norsemen, 21-13, 22-20.

“The girls definitely grew in that second set and the end of the first set vs. Roland-Story,” WCHS head coach Jess Howard said. “I think they realized they could compete. We ran the offense quick and controlled the tempo, we just came up a little short but showed a lot of growth.”

Tristyn Wright and Jaylyn Bahrenfuss each had 14 kills on the night, as Avery Poppen added eight and Ashlee Nydegger recorded four.

Morgan Hackbarth tallied 24 digs with four aces, serving 21 of 22. Wright recorded 18 assists with two aces while serving 21-for-21 with nine digs, and Alivia Burns had six digs and four aces.

Evie Davis contributed four blocks, four aces and three kills. Lovie Pruismann added 15 assists, four digs and two kills. Hailey Brim had four aces and four digs.

“It was nice to pick up a couple wins and get the season going,” Howard said. “We like to play a lot of non-North Central Conference games to get ready for that season by getting a lot of things ironed out and progressing.”

The Lynx head to Boone on Thursday before taking part in the St. Edmond Tournament at Iowa Central on Saturday.
