Track squads target state
Webster City and South Hamilton will compete in state-qualifying track and field meets on Thursday.
The Lynx head to Nevada for Class 3A action alongside Ballard, Boone, Carroll, Gilbert, Humboldt, the host Cubs and North Polk. The Hawks are in Madrid for a 1A meet with ACGC, AGWSR, Ankeny Christian, Audubon, CAM, Colo-Nesco, Coon Rapids-Bayard, Empigo Academy, Glidden-Ralston, Nodaway Valley, Paton-Churdan, West Fork and Woodward Academy.
Field events start at 4 p.m., with running events beginning 45 minutes later.
For Webster City, first- and second-place finishers will automatically qualify for the state meet on May 22-24 in Des Moines. From there, the fields will be completed with the next eight-best performances from other sites.
South Hamilton sees only the winner of each event qualify automatically, with the next best 14 efforts making it to state.
Jayden Weinzetl, Justin Callahan, Isabel Grossoehme, Adysen Poppen and Cloe Savitski are all returning state qualifiers for the Lynx.
Weinzetl is seeded second in the 100 and 200, Callahan is first in the 400, second in the 400 hurdles and third in the 800, and Cole Nohrenberg is fourth in the discus.
The sprint medley with Kaleb Hansen, Aiden Hrnicek, Weinzetl and Callahan is fourth, as is the discus medley with Weinzetl, Hrnicek, Daniel Murillo-Delfino and Callahan.
Grossoehme is seeded second in the 400 and Poppen second in the shot put. Savitski is third in the 100. Jakaela Cherry is fourth in the shot put and fifth in the discus.
The distance medley relay of Kali Hartnett, Tristyn Wright, Savitski and Grossoehme is third.
Kolby Hodnefield and Nick Severseike ran on the 2A winning 4×200 and 4×400 relays last year, and were also on the runner-up sprint medley. Hodnefield is seeded first in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 with Braden Young first in the long jump.
The Hawks are first in the 4×200, sprint medley and distance medley relay. The 4×1 and 4×4 are second.
For the girls, Stella Martensen is second and Isabel Swenson third in the high jump. Both the 4×1 and 4×2 are seeded second.
