MASON CITY — The South Hamilton boys golf squad flourished under pressure in a Class 1A district meet, securing runner-up honors and a state tournament bid at Highland Park Course.

The Hawks finished at 335 in the 18-team field, placing second behind only South Winneshiek (319). Head coach Steve Butler’s scorecard was balanced, with junior Brody Harris carding an 80 to lead the way.

Senior Connor Deppe (82) and senior Landon Sogard (83) were right behind. After a one-year hiatus, South Hamilton returns to the elite field next week in Waterloo.

“I couldn’t be prouder of this group, fighting through horrible weather conditions to place second,” Butler said. “It’s a testament to their mental toughness. Brody’s 80 was the difference. We needed a low score, and for him to place third overall was huge.

“Right now, we’re playing really well. I look forward to a good finish at state.”

Junior Sam Koehnk (90) and junior Luke Martensen (90) rounded out the lineup for the Hawks at districts.

Deppe, Sogard, Martensen and Michael Carlson were in the 2023 South Hamilton state lineup. The Hawks captured a district title that spring.

Martensen is the statistical leader for South Hamilton for the season, followed by Koehnk, Carlson and Sogard.

The 1A tournament is a 36-hole competition at South Hills Golf Course on Tuesday and Wednesday. Akron-Westfield, Boyden-Hull, Anita-CAM, Easton Valley, Hillcrest Academy, North Linn, Sigourney, South Winneshiek and West Fork round out the field.

Starting at $3.46/week.
