South Hamilton ready to make noise at state

DES MOINES — Last year, the South Hamilton boys track and field team claimed three state titles and a runner-up finish on their way to placing third overall in Class 2A.
This season, the Hawks are looking for more while competing in 1A.
Kolby Hodnefield, who ran on the winning 4×200-meter and 4×400 relays, is entered in three individual events and a relay this year.
The junior will be busy, running in the 100, 200 and 400 on Thursday here inside Drake Stadium. Hodnefield hits the track first at 4:40 p.m. for the 200 prelims, returns at 6:45 p.m. for the 100 prelims and concludes his day in the timed final of the 400 at 7:20 p.m.
Nick Severseike, who also ran on the championship relays last year, is in the 400 field with Hodnefield. The senior qualified for the 800 on Saturday at 11:10 a.m.
Braden Young will compete in the long jump to start the action on Thursday at 2 p.m. The prelims of the 4×100-meter relay are scheduled for Friday at 6:40 p.m., with the sprint medley relay hitting the blue oval at 9:50 a.m. Saturday.
The Hawks’ sprint med on the boys side is Hodnefield, Young, Severseike and Tanner Twedt. The 4×1 quartet is Twedt, Severseike, Young and Wyatt Gelder.
For the South Hamilton girls, Tessa Skartvedt throws Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the shot put and again on Friday in the discus at the same time.
The Hawks are also running in the 4×200 on Friday at 4:40 p.m. in a timed final and less than two hours later for the 4×100 prelims.
The 4×2 is Brooklyn Doolittle, Sara Scheller, Riah VanDePol and Sydnee Flaugh. The 4×1 is comprised of Flaugh, VanDePol, Emma Lammers and Doolittle.
