DES MOINES — For the second consecutive season, the South Hamilton boys walked away from Drake Stadium and the state track and field meet with a team trophy.

The Hawks, who placed third in Class 2A a year ago, were third in 1A this past weekend.

Kolby Hodnefield had a hand in nearly all of the points scored by South Hamilton, winning two events while also helping a relay place second and finishing third in another individual race.

Hodnefield opened his busy state meet with a championship run on Thursday. A year after placing fifth in the 400 while teammate Ty Koehnk claimed gold, Hodnefield jumped to the top, winning in a time of 48.13.

On that same day, Hodnefield clocked the fastest 100 and 200 prelim times, going 10.79 in the 100 and 21.71 in the 200. Hodnefield went on to win the 200 in a new personal record time of 21.78 on Saturday, while finishing third in the 100 in 10.99.

“It feels awesome,” Hodnefield said. “(The 200) is my race like the 400. I got out and got after it. It’s just a mental battle about who wants it more, and I wanted it more.

“I wouldn’t be here without my parents, brother and trainers. They do everything for me.”

Nick Severseike, Braden Young, Tanner Twedt and Hodnefield were just clipped in the sprint medley by Woodbine, finishing with silver in a season best 1:32.97.

Severseike added an eighth in the 400 for South Hamilton, going 51.32, while Young was ninth in the long jump with a leap of 20-7.5. He was also 21st in the 800 in 2:04.79.

In the 4×100 prelims, Young, Twedt, Wyatt Gelder and Severseike finished 12th in 44.49.

The South Hamilton girls had four qualifiers, as Tessa Skartvedt led the way by finishing 10th in the shot put. Skartvedt, a sophomore who also advanced to state in the discus, had a throw of 35-2 in the shot put.

The 4×200 relay of Sydnee Flaugh, Riah Van De Pol, Sara Scheller and Brooklyn Doolittle lowered their season best time to 1:49.16, placing ninth overall and third in their heat.

In the 4×400 prelims, Flaugh, Van De Pol, Emma Lammers and Doolittle went 52.94 to take 23rd overall.

Starting at $3.46/week.
