Hawks push a dozen events through to Des Moines

MADRID — Kolby Hodnefield put on a show here last Thursday night in a Class 1A state qualifier, securing three individual titles to lead the way for the South Hamilton boys.
The Hawks earned a total of 12 combined bids to the state meet, which begins this Thursday in Des Moines from Drake Stadium.
Eight of those 12 came from the South Hamilton boys, as Hodnefield qualified in the 100, 200 and 400. Nick Severseike earned spots in the 400 and 800 while Braden Young advanced in the long jump.
Both the 4×100 and sprint medley relays will be in action on the boys’ side as well.
Along with Hodnefield’s trio of first-place finishes, Severseike won the 800 and the sprint medley. Severseike, Young, Tanner Twedt and Hodnefield grabbed gold.
Young was second in the long jump and fifth in the 100, Severseike added a third in the 400, Jesus Garcia was fourth in the 3,200 and sixth in the 1,600, and Twedt was fourth in the 200.
The 4×100 of Young, Twedt, Wyatt Gelder and Severseike finished third, while the 4×800 was fourth.
For the Hawk girls, Tessa Skartvedt qualified in both the shot put and discus, with the 4×100- and 4×2000-meter relays relays joining her.
Skartvedt was fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put at the SQM. Claire Hewitt placed second in the long jump.
South Hamilton’s 4×100 relay of Sydnee Flaugh, Riah Van De Pol, Emma Lammers and Brooklyn Doolittle won the race to qualify automatically, while the 4×200 of Flaugh, Van De Pol, Sara Scheller and Doolittle earned an at-large bid after placing second.
Stella Martensen was fifth in the high jump, Cici Herrick placed fifth in the 400, Olivia Beaune was sixth in the 400, Vivian Swenson sixth in the 100 hurdles, and Isabel Swenson sixth in the high jump.
