The South Hamilton boys golf team has plenty of familiar names on its lineup card this spring, but head coach Steve Butler insists the Hawks are far from a finished product.

Six regular players from last year’s scorecard return, and many of them have multiple seasons of varsity time under their belts.

“Experience will be a huge strength,” Butler said. “These guys have demonstrated that they know how to win, and they’re looking for even more success (in 2025).

“Although we have (veteran golfers), like all teams, we need to be mentally tough and consistent on the course. The mental game is something we continue to work on.”

Seniors Landon Sogard and Connor Deppe are flanked by juniors Luke Martensen, Michael Carlson, Sam Koehnk and Brody Harris. Sogard, Deppe, Martensen and Carlson were on South Hamilton’s state-qualifying squad two seasons ago.

“Having four letterwinners back with state tournament experience is obviously a plus,” Butler said. “I look to the veterans to pass that (knowledge and leadership) on to the other team members.

“Sam is the one player I look to take a big step forward. He was added to the Top-6 late last year and proved he belonged. I know he’s worked a lot to improve his game. He’ll be a factor, as will Brody.”

Sogard, Deppe and Martensen all had nine-hole scoring averages under 46 a year ago. Sogard was 10th individually at the state tournament in 2023.

Junior varsity players include Connor Ash, Jacob Lutjen, Trevor Zanker and Elijah Henderson.

The Hawks start their season on Monday at Bondurant-Farrar. Their only scheduled home meet is a May 8 dual versus Ogden.
