Busy early stretch for Webster City wrestlers

The Webster City wrestling team secured a dual win at Carroll on Thursday, while coming up just short of another.

The Lynx prevailed in 10 matches against Boone in posting a 60-23 victory. Host Carroll then edged Webster City, 39-38.

Gavin Wynkoop, Dawson Bertran, Tristan Mason, Cody Elliott and Ty Bingham all prevailed twice.

“I thought overall, we fought hard whistle-to-whistle in every match,” WCHS head coach Drake Doolittle said. “I was very impressed with the ability of our guys to wrestle through positions even when we were tired.

“We have quite a few guys that have put a lot of time into the sport over the summer and it showed (Thursday night).”

The dual with Carroll came down to the final two matches, with each squad securing a fall. Wynkoop, Bertran, Mason, Blake Berninghaus, Elliott, Bingham and Carson Bertran were winners versus the Tigers.

“It was a heartbreaker,” Doolittle said, “but awesome to see our guys get fired up for their teammates. That dual could have gone either way. I was proud of how our guys fought to the very end.”

Others earning wins in the dual vs. Boone included Ridge Berninghaus, Eli Estlund, Maurice Anderson, Angel Ramirez and Brayden Burnett.

“It’s still very early in the season, but overall, I was happy with how we came out and competed for our first time out,” Doolittle said. “We have a good starting point, now we need to continue to grow and get a little better every time we step out on the mat.

“We have a lot of guys up and down the lineup that can be very good if they put their mind to it.”

Securing junior varsity wins were Tariq Burton, Jake Rohmiller and Peyton Weisberg.

Webster City then the Dallas Center Grimes Invitational on Saturday.

Carson Bertran (175) was the top finisher for the Lynx, placing third. Bertran pinned Chance Chappell of Lewis Central in 5:39 for bronze.

Mason took fifth at 150 pounds. Mason lost his first match, but bounced back with a technical fall, a pin, and a tight 1-0 decision in the fifth-place match.

Wynkoop (132), and Cael Alexander (285) were sixth.

Carson Burtnett (126), Bertran (138), Eli Estlund (190) and Elliott (215) were seventh.
