DIKE — The South Hamilton football team has made qualifying for the postseason the norm, doing so each of the past five seasons.

They have also shown a knack for making it out of the first round, having done that now in each of the past three years following a 22-21 come-from-behind win over Sioux Central last week.

Now, the Hawks prepare for one of Class 1A’s best in Dike-New Hartford here Friday night.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

South Hamilton (5-4 overall) and the Wolverines (8-1) are part of Pod B with Emmetsburg and South Hardin. The winners of those two games meet next week for a spot in the semifinals and the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.

A pair of third-quarter touchdowns helped the Hawks erase a 21-8 deficit and eliminate the Rebels on their home field. Ashton Williams found the end zone twice, running for 71 yards, Kolby Hodnefield had 83 yards rushing and a TD, and freshman Wyatt Gelder added 43.

Nick Severseike picked off a pass and Titus Herrick had a sack while Brody Harris was all over the field, recording 10.5 tackles. Both Williams and Hodnefield had 8.5 tackles with Brock Zorn adding seven.

Severseike, a returning all-stater, leads South Hamilton with 667 yards rushing. Williams has a team-high nine touchdowns with 585 yards while Hodnefield has 642 yards on the ground and five scores.

Dike-New Hartford blitzed Ogden to advance, 54-0, and has won eight straight including a wins over West Branch, Sumner-Fredericksburg and MFL MarMac, who are all still alive in 1A. They allowed just six total points in those three wins and only two teams have scored over 13 vs. the Wolverines this year.

One of those was Grundy Center, as the defending state champions posted a 21-7 victory in Week 1.

Senior Noah Borcherding has almost 1,200 yards rushing with 19 touchdowns while quarterback Colin Meester is 74 of 120 for 955 yards with 12 touchdowns.

The other 1A games include West Branch at Grundy Center, Sumner-Fredericksburg at Manson Northwest Webster, Hinton at OABCIG, Underwood at Treynor, Iowa City Regina at Woodward-Granger and MFL MarMac at Wilton.
