South Hamilton wipes out Nodaway Valley to build momentum
JEWELL — The South Hamilton football team has found what had been missing earlier in the season.
After dropping three straight games to open 2024, the Hawks (2-3 overall) have rediscovered their running game. South Hamilton grinded out 370 yards on the ground on Friday in a 38-0 win over Nodaway Valley (0-5, 0-2).
“We had a good offensive game,” said SH head coach Paul Skartvedt. “The offensive line has been improving each week and got better again by making holes for the running backs.”
After three non-district losses, the Hawks and Woodward-Granger are now the lone unbeaten squads in league play.
In their three setbacks, the Hawks ran for a combined 468 yards. In South Hamilton’s consecutive victories, they have 588.
On Friday, both Kolby Hodnefield (127) and Nick Severseike (120) went over the century mark. Hodnefield had two touchdowns, with a long of 55, and Severseike added a 28-yard scoring jaunt.
Braden Young (10 yards) and Ashton Williams (five) contributed TDs as well.
“Running backs had good vision, seeing the openings that the linemen were giving them,” Skartvedt said. “Both Nick and Kolby had big plays and did a terrific job.”
South Hamilton’s defense, meanwhile, held Nodaway Valley to 129 total yards.
“Our defense had one of its best games all year. Our linebackers played particularly well,” Skartvedt said. “Our defensive backs are getting more experience, with the younger guys and improving each week.”
Severseike had a pair of two-point conversions, while Williams and Young tallied one each.
South Hamilton will host Ogden for their Homecoming contest this Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
