FORT DODGE — The Webster City volleyball team shook off a rough weekend of play to remain unbeaten in North Central Conference action here Tuesday night.
The Lynx dug deep to secure a five-set win over St. Edmond, taking the final two sets.
Scores were 25-15, 23-25, 21-25, 25-21 and 15-13.
Marissa Hedeen, one of six seniors on the roster for the Lynx (9-8 overall, 4-0 in league) had 30 kills while classmate Olivia Gallentine added 18.
“In the fourth set, the girls were mentally tough and overcame the fact that they were tired,” WCHS head coach Jess Howard said. “I think it was their mental toughness that got them through it.”
After providing a jolt of energy to a packed gym by taking the first set behind five kills from Hedeen and four by Gallentine, Webster City was unable to keep the momentum going vs. the Gaels (10-6, 2-2).
St. Edmond took back control by winning sets two and three, forcing the Lynx to play with their backs against the wall.
Hedeen and Gallentine rose to the challenge, recording 11 kills in the fourth and following that up with Hedeen accounting for six in the fifth with a key block.
“That is a tough, loud gym and is always a good atmosphere for competition,” Howard said. “The girls did a good job of controlling what they could on the court and using the energy from the crowd to do what they needed to do.”
Hedeen finished the night 51 of 54 on attacks while adding 13 digs and two blocks.
Tristyn Wright had nine kills, 29 assists, two blocks, 15 digs and was a perfect 25-for-25 serving, Addilyn Orton had nine kills and four blocks, Gallentine recorded 28 assists, 14 digs and was 11-for-12 serving, and Cloe Savitski had 22 digs.
Morgan Hackbarth finished with 21 digs and was 23 of 24 serving with an ace while Alivia Burns added seven digs and Avery Poppen had two kills as Webster City improved to 11-1 over the last 12 vs. the Gaels.
For St. Edmond, Mariah Myers finished with 16 kills, Ava Underberg and Faith Shirbroun each had eight, and Ava Andrews tallied six aces.
The Lynx return to action Monday when they host Iowa Falls-Alden.
