Lynx fall short in 2A quarters

DES MOINES — The Webster City boys soccer team saw their magical season come to an end here Wednesday in the quarterfinal round of the Class 2A state tournament.

The Lynx dropped a 5-1 decision to Sioux City Heelan, who now advances to the semifinals where they will meet Gilbert on Friday. That game will be played at 10 a.m. inside Mediacom Stadium.

Co-champions of the North Central Conference, Webster City (15-2 overall) was making its second consecutive appearance at James W. Cownie Soccer Park. This was the first meeting with the Crusaders, who advanced to the semifinals last year before falling to Gilbert.

This marked the final game for Lynx seniors Walfre Lopez, Aiden Rahe, Eduardo Perez, Cristian Banda Bermudez and Francisco Arguera Chavez. Webster City, ranked fourth in the last poll, has won at least 10 matches each of the past five seasons, going 29-3 the last two years.

Perez had the lone goal for Webster City, scoring on a penalty kick in the 79th minute.

Fifth-ranked Sioux City Heelan (15-3) has now won 40 matches over the past three seasons. They have lost to No. 1 (3A) Lewis Central, top-ranked Gilbert and Sioux City West this year.

The Crusaders took advantage of two handballs by Webster City in the opening 10 minutes, tallying a pair of penalty kicks before Andres Gonzalez scored to make it 3-0 before the half.

In the other 2A semifinal, No. 9 Perry and Davenport Assumption square off.

Gilbert claimed a 2-1 victory over Center Point-Urbana in the quarters, Perry bested No. 3 Decorah on penalty kicks after two overtimes, 2-1, and Assumption knocked off second-ranked Glenwood, 4-0.
