Cherry doubles up in Saydel

SAYDEL — Ahead of their home meet, the Webster City boys had a strong showing here at the Saydel Invitational.

Jaxon Cherry once again swept the throwing events, winning the discus and shot put. Joining him atop the podium as Justin Callahan, who captured the 400 hurdles.

The Lynx placed fifth overall with 65 points, just three back of Nevada and nine behind Gilbert. North Polk won team gold by a half-point over Madrid.

“We had some performances and did a great job of getting prepared for events in not the best weather conditions,” WCHS head coach Chad Hisler said. “We started out great in the field events and that carried over to the track.”

Cherry had a throw of 50-10 to win the shot put and a best of 147-2.5 in the discus.

Callahan, competing in the 400 hurdles for just the second time, ran 58.43 and would anchor the runner-up sprint medley relay that went 1:40.92.

Jaxon Griffith, Luke Estlund and Jayden Weinzetl joined Callahan on the relay.

Keegan Hisler was a runner-up in the high jump, clearing 6-foot, as Weinzetl was third in the 200 (23.57) and fifth in the 100 (11.62).

Webster City will honor seniors Spencer Callahan, Cherry, Jesse Crutcher, Landon Griffin, Hisler, Brandon Lahr, Lincoln Tiekle and Sam Youngdale on Tuesday.
