The Webster City boys golf squad carries high hopes into the 2024 season, and for good reason.

The Lynx return their entire lineup from a year ago, with seniors Braden Doering and Braylon Plain leading the way alongside junior Cael Nixon.

Senior Trevyn Lyons and junior Luke Firsching are also back in the mix for head coach Eric Dawson. Senior Brandon Lahr, junior Cole Miller and sophomore Dawson Bertran are veterans who will push for spots on the scorecard as well.

“These guys have been in the program, and we are expecting big things from them,” Dawson said. “They all have varsity meet experience, and have improved and played a lot of golf (in the offseason).

“Our experience will be our strength. This is one of my oldest teams I’ve had since being the coach. They’ve all played a lot of competitive golf, so we have high expectations.”

Doering advanced out of the sectional tournament a year ago with a round of 78 at the Carroll Country Club. Nixon (82) and Plain (86) were next in line.

Doering (79), Nixon (80) and Plain (83) were the program’s top performers at the 2023 North Central Conference Tournament at Spring Valley.

Nixon and Doering will be in the varsity lineup for a third consecutive season. Doering (40.8), Plain (41.5) and Nixon (43.2) were the nine-hole statistical leaders last spring.

“We want to win the (North Central Conference) – both the dual team race and the tournament,” Dawson said. “Also, we feel like we have a team that can get to state.”

The future is now for the Lynx, but Dawson is always looking forward. There are an impressive 18 other team members on the roster vying for junior varsity time, in addition to the eight returning letterwinners.

“We just need to make sure our young guys are improving,” Dawson said. “We have to plant the seed as coaches for them to play all summer and just try and get better every day.”

Webster City’s first meet, scheduled for Monday, has been postponed. The Lynx now open April 11 at Woodward-Granger. Their annual home invitational is May 2.
