SENIOR POWER

Pulis, VanDemark win for Fort Dodge

Maddie Pulis wanted to win on the night made for her class.

The Fort Dodge girls wrestling team honored their seniors last Thursday.

The senior trio of Andee Barwin (120), Macy Brown (130) and Pulis (170) only had one win between the three against Ames inside the FDSH gym, but they didn’t go down without a fight.

The Dodgers won four head-to-head matches and earned a forfeit in a 45-27 loss to the Little Cyclones.

Pulis (30-7), a senior at Webster City, picked up her 30th victory of the season, pinning AK Nolin in 1:08 at 170 pounds.

“Maddie wanted to go and get that win,” said FDSH head coach Jon Koenig. “She did what she usually does and controlled the match.

“I’m proud of her for coming out and being a leader for us.”

Fellow Webster City student Kaitlynn VanDemark (13-17), a freshman, showed what the future holds for Lynx competing with the Dodgers.

Van Demark controlled her entire match against Bate Badding at 115 pounds, picking up a 7-0 decision.

“She has performed well for us,” Koenig said. “Once (Araya) Fellers suffered an injury, Kaitlynn stepped in and has been competing well.”

Brown (20-20) went for it all against third-rated Alexis Winkey at 130 pounds. Brown took Winkey down and had her on her back, but Winkey reversed it and ultimately earned the fall.

Barwin (9-13) dropped a tough contest with Lexa Rozevink, losing by fall in the second period.

“Winkey moved up a weight and I asked Macy if she wanted to wrestle,” Koeing said. “She said yes and I told her to go out there and make a splash.

“She did exactly that and nearly pulled off the upset.”

No. 3 sophomore Mariaha Benedict (38-3) made quick work of Sarah Higgins, earning a fall in 44 seconds at 135 pounds.

“Mariaha has lofty goals,” Koenig said. “She goes out there and wrestles hard every time out.”

Junior Delaney O’Connor (26-19) earned the third fall for the Dodgers, pinning Lily Anderson in 1:56 at 140.

“Delaney has been wrestling tough,” Koenig said. “I’m not shocked about how she has been competing and improving.”

Sophomore Gracie Harvey (25-11 at 110) earned a forfeit victory.

The Dodgers are back in action on Thursday when they host the Iowa Alliance Conference tournament in the FDSH gym. Action begins at 5:30 p.m.

Starting at $3.46/week.
