SIOUX CITY — Webster City senior wrestler Maddie Pulis earned super regional runner-up honors on Friday and punched her return ticket to the state tournament.

Joining Pulis at state representing Fort Dodge this Thursday and Friday in Coralville will be fellow runner-up Mariaha Benedict (135) and Macy Brown (130).

“Obviously, Maddie wanted to enter state as (super regional) champion,” Fort Dodge head coach Jon Koenig said. “She wrestled a tough and tight match in the finals.

“She reached her goal of returning to state, though, and now she wants to reach the goal of earning a medal.”

Pulis (32-8) won her quarterfinal and beat Daynia Werner of Ridge View in the semifinals (10-0).

The senior then dropped a tight 8-7 decision to Algona’s Reagan Haynes with a late takedown.

“There was a tough call late in the match and I didn’t get a takedown when I thought I should have,” Pulis said. “I have to get over it and I just have to do better next week.

“It means a lot to qualify, but this year, there is the pressure to place. My motivation now is to not lose (this) week like I lost (last Friday).”

Benedict had two falls and an 8-4 decision in the semis. She then lost to fifth-ranked Isabella Deeds (41-3) of Ridge View, 3-2.

Deeds escaped with seven seconds left in the final period after Benedict kept her down for the entire time.

“I worked hard with the mentality that I want to be the best,” Benedict said. “I also would like to thank my coaches — Coach Koenig and the others — for always putting me in the right mindset before matches and talking me through any doubts I may have.”

Brown went 5-2 and had to rally for a fourth-place finish.

Sophomore Gracie Harvey (110) finished fifth, while classmate Alejandra Manzanilla (105) was sixth.

“Gracie has really come a long way, and now hopefully, she can build on this for next season,” Koenig said. “Kaitlynn VanDemark (115) has a lot of potential. Lucy (Porter), Delaney (O’Connor) and Alejandra will be back next year to get better. Andee (Barwin) had a great season and improved a lot as well.”
