WEBSTER CITY — Another slow start kept the Webster City girls from challenging Algona here Friday night.
The Lynx fell behind 21-4 after the first on their way to a 66-23 North Central Conference loss.
Tristyn Wright had 10 points, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers, to lead Webster City. Izzy Grossoehme added dive points with Olivia Gallentine, Ady Poppen, Joleah Stuhr and Lovie Pruismann all scoring two.
“It sound a little like a broken record, but it comes down again to consistency and playing through mistakes,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “We struggled to rebound the ball early and missed some layups, and yet with a minute to go in the first quarter, we were within six points.
“But we let mistakes compound quickly and let them go on an 11-0 run to end the quarter in about a minute span.”
Stuhr led the team in rebounding and Grossoehme had a 3-pointer.
After the tough first quarter, the Lynx battled with the Bulldogs in the second, as Algona outscored them 21-13. Over the final 16 minutes, it was all Algona.
“We played well again for long stretches in the second quarter, keeping the score within striking distance,” Fisher said. “We just have to work to where we can execute for 32 minutes, not just for stretches. There continues to be flashes there of what we could be.
“We defended well for stretches, ran the floor well for stretches, saw freshmen score 17 of our 23 points; but we have to be more consistent, and we have to keep getting better at the little things. Winning is hard, and we’re still learning what it takes.”
The Lynx return to action on Tuesday when they travel to St. Edmond.
