Slow start hinders Webster City girls
ROCKWELL CITY — The Webster City girls were unable to overcome a tough first quarter, dropping a 66-42 decision to South Central Calhoun here Tuesday night.
The Titans raced out to a 23-8 lead, building on that advantage before the half to go up 36-11.
“I don’t know that the first half could have gone much worse,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “We didn’t have a lot of energy out of the gate, threw the ball away a bunch, missed some transition lay-ups and gave up five three’s in the quarter.
“There were some signs early that we were going to have another nice first half as we executed some defensive possessions well and we got out and ran in transition. But couldn’t capitalize early, and a few mistakes led to a snowball effect.”
For the Lynx, Olivia Gallentine and Joleah Stuhr each had nine points with Marissa Hedeen adding five.
Ady Poppen chipped in three points and four rebounds as Addyson Beaulieu and Kennedy Halling each had four. Alivia Burns and Tristyn Wright chipped in three, and Lovie Pruismann had two.
Beaulieu, Halling, Gallentine, Hedeen, Poppen, Wright and Stuhr all knocked down a 3-pointer.
Adlen Wheelock led the Titans with 11 while Mia Babcock added eight and Sadie Wheelock seven.
Webster City outscored South Central Calhoun in the fourth, 21-12.
“Extremely proud of the way the girls kept battling and came back and had a much better second half,” Fisher said. “It would have been easy in that situation to just roll over and quit, but the girls kept battling. We did some nice things to crank up the pressure, offensively we took care of the ball better and made some better passes and we hit shots.
“We’ve always talked about this being a process and taking time to build up the culture we want. Finding that consistency and that desire to work hard all the time, not just some of the time. Winning any given night is tough, and we’re continuing to learn how to do that. Hopefully we can build on the second half as we continue with practice the rest of the week.”
The Lynx return to North Central Conference play on Friday, hosting 11th-ranked (Class 3A) Algona.
