Lynx win two titles at DCG

Linden Phetxoumphone and Carson Doolittle capped off a big week for Webster City wrestling by claiming titles at the Andy Davidson DCG Mustang Invitational this past Saturday

Phetxoumphone went 3-0 to finish first at 113 pounds, as Doolittle matched that at 126. Phetxoumphone moved to 7-0 on the year with a first period fall over Urbandale’s Caleb Arroyo in the finals after earning a technical fall and a decision earlier in the day.

Doolittle, a three-time third place state medalist, had back-to-back pins before scoring a 19-3 technical fall vs. Johnston’s Shandrel Thompson for first. This was the first tournament for new WCHS head coach Drake Doolittle.

Heavyweight Landon Griffin reached the finals, coming up short vs. Nick Darling of Johnston, 3-1.

Carson Bertran added a third, Luke Estlund was fourth, Gavin Wynkoop finished seventh and both Brayden Burtnett and Jayden Weinzetl were eighth for the Lynx.

Johnston scored 222.5 points for team honors with Creston/Orient-Macksburg second and Carroll third. Webster City finished seventh ahead of Lewis Central and five others.

Last Thursday, the Lynx went 1-1 in a triangular, besting Boone, 36-30, while falling to Carroll, 52-30.

Phetxoumphone, Doolittle, Estlund and Griffin all went 2-0 on the night while Burtnett, Wynkoop, Bertran and Weinzetl each picked up a win.

“We wrestled hard and there was improvement from our wrestling earlier in the week,” Doolittle said. “It was great to see the guys on our team rise to the occasion and get big wins for the team score.

“The effort is there; now, we just need to focus on making adjustments to stay in good position and give us more opportunities to win those close matches.”
