Lynx fall short against Falcons

PARKERSBURG — The Webster City girls stayed close to ninth-ranked (Class 2A) Aplington-Parkersburg here this past Friday night before a tough third quarter allowed the Falcons to pull away.

Aplington-Parkersburg outscored the Lynx after the halftime break, 17-7, on its way to a 66-39 victory.

For Webster City (0-4 overall), Olivia Gallentine had 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, Marissa Hedeen had nine points on three 3-pointers and seven others scored points.

The Lynx were within four after the first and 10 at the half, but the Falcons (4-0) scored 34 points over the final 16 minutes. Lexi Aswegen had 17, Kendall Riherd added 12 points and 16 rebounds, and Peyton Klooster had 11 for A-P.

“Again, we played some of our best basketball of the season for stretches,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “I thought we played some of our best defense yet and did a great job, especially early of rotating properly and having the correct reactions to different situations.

“Give Aplington-Parkersburg a ton of credit as they have quick guards and they can shoot.”

The Lynx were as close as six in the first half before the Falcons went on another run.

“Turnovers were an issue, and not just the ones we lost but bad passes,” Fisher said. “We just got cold from outside and missed some layups.

“We still have a lot to fix, but I saw some glimpses of some really good things.”

Up next for Webster City will be a road game Tuesday at South Central Calhoun.
