Veteran assistant and Webster City native Andy Brim has been tabbed the next head football coach for the Lynx.
His hiring was made official by the school board’s approval on Monday night.
Brim becomes just the seventh head football coach for the program since 1948, replacing the recently-retired Bob Howard. He has spent the previous 17 years as an assistant for the Lynx, helping them win over 120 games and reach the playoffs multiple times.
“I’m really excited to get the opportunity to keep working with the great kids that we have who show up everyday ready to work,” Brim said. “I’ve been extremely fortunate to spend the last 17 years learning from one of the best in Coach Howard. I’m grateful for the opportunities that Coach Howard has given me throughout the years and for this new opportunity.”
Brim has worked in the Webster City school district since 2013. He graduated from Webster City in 2004 and earned his bachelor of science degree from Iowa State University in 2008 before earning his master’s from Grand Canyon University in 2013.
“Growing up in Webster City, I’ve always been loyal to Lynx football,” Brim said. “It taught me so much as a player and then even more as a coach, I just hope I can pass some of that knowledge on to the kids. It’s been a dream of mine for a long time to have a chance to lead this program.
“There’s always been a lot of community and school pride around Lynx athletics and especially football so it’s really an honor to have the chance be able to lead a program with so much tradition.”
Brim joins Howard, Dick Tighe, Harley Rollinger, Kurt Luhring, Dick Kennedy and Jim Duncan as recent head coaches.
The Lynx are coming off an 8-3 season in which they reached the Class 3A quarterfinals. They are slated to return regulars Luke Estlund, Jaxon Griffin, Aiden Hrnicek, Jayden Weinzetl, Cael Nixon, Beau Nohrenberg, Cole Nohrenberg, Max McGilligan, Cody Elliot, Eli Estlund and Carson Bertran.
“My initial goal is to be able to keep the Lynx football program up to the standard that has been set over the last several years,” he said. “We had a fantastic senior class this past season that will leave some holes to fill but we’ve got some kids that are anxious to prove themselves and to step into some key roles.
“That’s one of the challenges…to maintain a competitive team year in and year out. But our kids do a great job of laying the foundation for those who come after them.”
Webster City opens the 2024 campaign in August at Fort Dodge.
