WEBSTER CITY — The Webster City girls opened their season here Friday night, falling to Boone, 57-42.
Olivia Gallentine scored a team-high 16 points, adding five rebounds. Izzy Grossoehme had seven points and both Alivia Burns and Marissa Hedeen chipped in five.
Gallentine, Hedeen and Grossoehme all knocked down a 3-pointer.
“Like we told the girls afterwards, it was a first game,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “It’s a starting point that we look to grow and improve from. No team sets out to go 1-0 on the season and have that be it.
“I thought we had a lot of jitters going into the game. Some of that comes from having two freshmen play big minutes and having a relatively young team on experience.”
Hedeen had seven rebounds, with four coming on the offensive glass, and Ady Poppen had eight boards. Tristyn Wright and Joleah Stuhr each had four rebounds.
“Probably the two biggest keys for us was rebounding and turnovers,” Fisher said. “I loved a lot of what we did on defense and the shots we were forcing them in to, but we struggled to finish off possessions with rebounds. That also affected our ability to get out and run as much as we wanted to.
“(Boone’s) pressure really bothered us and we made some bad passes and some bad decisions. We take care of those two areas and I firmly believe the score is flipped.”
Erin Ades led Boone with a game-high 17 points.
Webster City heads to Carroll on Tuesday before returning home on Tuesday, Nov. 28 for its North Central Conference opener vs. defending league champion Clear Lake.
“It was good to see the passion and the fire they played,” Fisher said. “This is a group that really cares and wants to turn this thing around and build a culture. They’ve worked so hard and I wish we could have gotten them a win for it.”
