Carroll pulls away from Lynx girls

CARROLL — The Webster City girls basketball team couldn’t slow down Carroll recently in a 68-32 loss.

The Lynx were only down 11 points at halftime, 33-22. The homestanding Tigers pulled away from there.

Junior Olivia Gallentine led all scorers with 17 points for Webster City (0-2 overall). Three Carroll players reached double figures, including two reserves — Sophia Tidgren (14 points) and Carly Menken (13). Freshman starter Chloe Kock added 12.

“I know it’s not always easy to see with a lopsided final score, but the girls made a lot of progress in this game,” said WCHS head coach Mark Fisher. “The first half in particular was much better than our game with Boone. We rebounded much better on both ends, we took care of the ball better and played more free.

I thought Olivia showed a lot more poise and was extremely aggressive against a very solid player and athlete in (Tiger standout Katelyn) Aden. I thought she was the best player on the floor between the two of them all night.”

Fisher saw a jump from the opener in more ways than one, despite the setback.

“Our composure was much better in this game, and our execution early was much better,” Fisher said. “One of the things that shocked me a little when looking at the stats was our lack of assists. Some of that comes down to needing to continue to grow and get comfortable in the offense and the way the ball needs to flow and move and where those open spots will be, but some of also is we just missed shots.

“With that said, I do feel we’re headed in the right direction. This was a much bigger test and we played much better for stretches. This is a great group of girls that wants to turn the culture and this program around.”

Webster City hosts Clear Lake on Tuesday.
