WEBSTER CITY — It was a perfect storm for the Webster City football team on Friday night.

With rain and windy conditions, the Lynx took full advantage, dominating Algona in a pivotal District 2 matchup, 47-0.

Webster City (6-2 overall, 3-1 in district) will now take on another North Central Conference rival in Humboldt (5-3, 3-1) this week. The Wildcats knocked off previously unbeaten Clear Lake last week, 34-0.

“The rain and field conditions certainly affected the game, but we did a great job with center snaps, ball handling and ball security,” WCHS head coach Bob Howard said. “We won the turnover battle with three recoveries and that was key.”

Jaxon Cherry returned to action and rushed 25 times for 218 yards and four touchdowns, averaging almost nine yards per carry. Keegan Hisler had two rushing scores and 85 yards while Cael Nixon added 77 and a score.

“The offensive line had a dominating performance,” Howard said. “They came off the ball hard, kept their feet and that resulted in 450 yards rushing. Also, Luke did a great job at wingback, consistently blocking the edge so that we could get out on our sweep. Josh Stansfield and (Jayden) Weinzetl also had their best games at fullback.”

The Lynx finished the night with 457 rushing yards, holding Algona (5-3, 2-2) to 69 yards of total offense. Alex Manske, a two-time all-stater, was 0-for-4 passing and held to negative-17 yards on the ground.

Cherry had two sacks with Webster City recording seven tackles for loss. Cherry had nine stops and both Hisler and Nixon finished with 4.5.

Weinzetl, Beau Nohrenberg and Carson Betran each recovered a fumble for the Lynx, who built a commanding 35-0 lead at the half.

“Jaxon and Cael did a great job of spying their QB and coming up with big sacks when he scrambled,” Howard said. “Nixon’s strip-sack on the first Algona series with Jayden recovering set the tone for the first half.”

The win was the first since 2015 for the Lynx over Algona, who had scored at least 22 points in all seven previous games entering the night.

Humboldt has won two straight over Webster City, including 10-0 a season ago. The Lynx lead the series 9-4 over the last 13 meetings.

“Humboldt had a huge win last week,” Howard said. “They have a lot of athletes and a winning program so we know we’ll have another tough one for the final game.

“Both teams will be playing for the guaranteed playoff spot so it will be a big game for both, which is how it should be for the ninth game.”
