PLAYOFF THOUGHTS
WEBSTER CITY — The postseason remains on the minds of the Webster City football team with two games left.
The Lynx host Algona this Friday night before squaring off with Humboldt next week.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
All three North Central Conference rivals are currently tied for second in the district behind frontrunner Clear Lake. While Webster City (5-2 overall, 2-1) has yet to play Humboldt (4-3, 2-1), the Bulldogs (5-2, 2-1) picked up a win over the Wildcats last week.
At the same time, the Lynx were dominating Charles City even without the services of all-state running back Jaxon Cherry. Cael Nixon ran for 188 and four scores, Luke Estlund had 168 and a TD, and Keegan Hisler added 89 and a pair of touchdowns on the ground.
Cherry, who has over 1,000 yards on the season, is expected back in the lineup. He also ranks among the leaders on the team with 45.5 tackles including 16 for loss and five sacks.
Algona is paced by all-state quarterback Alex Manske, as the junior continues to field Power 5 offers to play at the next level. He has yet to throw an interception among his 126 attempts, completing 82 for 1,510 yards and 14 scores.
Manske is also the leading rusher for the Bulldogs with 622 yards and 11 touchdowns, as Porter Reffer has caught 38 passes for 823 and seven.
After falling to Clear Lake, 29-28, Algona bounced back with a 34-17 victory over Humboldt. They also own wins over Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley and Estherville-LC this season.
Webster City has won seven of the last 10 meetings between the two, with the Bulldogs taking the last two in 2019 (34-33) an d 2018 (34-21).
In the latest RPI, Clear Lake is first in Class 3A with Algona ninth, Webster City 10th, Humboldt 13th and Hampton-Dumont/CAL 15th.
