CHARLES CITY — The Webster City football team kept pace in a tight district race with a convincing 49-13 victory here Friday night over Charles City.
Since a pair of losses last month, the Lynx have won two straight, outscoring those opponents a combined 84-19.
Cael Nixon rushed for 188 yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries as the lead back with Luke Estlund adding 168 and a score. Keegan Hisler racked up 89 yards and found the end zone twice as Webster City was able to rush for 445 yards even without all-stater Jaxon Cherry.
“The offensive line had another solid game,” WCHS head coach Bob Howard said. “Max McGilligan played his first game at strong tackle, filling in for Cole Nohrenberg, who missed the game with a broken hand. To run the ball like we did without the state’s leading rusher (Cherry) and our strong tackle was an accomplishment.
“We anticipate both Jaxon and Cole being back next week.”
The Lynx raced out to a quick 21-0 lead in the first to take control of the contest. From there, the defense did the rest, recording three sacks and almost 10 tackles for loss.
Hisler, Tristan Mason and Jayden Weinzetl all registered a sack each with Briar Klaver picking up 6.5 tackles including six solo stops. Trevyn Lyons, Jaxon Griffith and Carson Bertran all picked off a pass.
“The kids did a great job of coming out focused and with great intensity to start the game for the second week in a row,” Howard said. “We had to move kids around to new positions, particularly on defense, but they prepared well and executed.
“Our run defense was especially tough in the first half. Nohrenberg and Mason were active inside and Nixon and Aiden Hrnicek did a great job reading running lanes and filling at linebacker. Charles City has a good QB and a very talented receiver and they were able to hit several passes downfield, but we also came up with interceptions, with all of them leading to offensive scores.”
Webster City will now turn its attention to North Central Conference rival Algona, who picked up a win over Humboldt last week. The Lynx, Bulldogs and Wildcats are all 2-1 in the district, a game behind Clear Lake.
“Algona is a big and talented team with a lot of athletes and a very talented QB,” Howard said. “It will be another big challenge and we’ll need a great week of practice to get ready.”
