CHARLESTON, S.C. — Former South Hamilton standout Alex Huisman has been added to the men’s basketball coaching staff at Charleston Southern.

Huisman will serve as the team’s director of basketball operations, Charleston Southern head coach Barclay Radebaugh announced. He joins newcomer Ronnell Crocket, who was hired as the team’s video coordinator this year.

“We are excited and thankful to add Alex and Ronnell to our staff,” Radebaugh said. “They both will bring strong and unique qualities to our staff. Alex and Ronnell are men of excellence, know how to build strong relationships and are totally bought in and passionate about our efforts to help our players grow academically, athletically, emotional and spiritually.”

After graduating from South Hamilton, where he was an all-conference player and team captain, Huisman joined the basketball program at Upper Iowa University. He earned his bachelor’s from the school and would serve as a graduate assistant for a season.

From there, he was an assistant coach for a season Iowa Wesleyan before being named head coach in 2014. He would serve in that role until 2022 when he joined Trevecca Nazarene in Nashville for a season as an assistant coach.

Huisman was elevated to the interim head coach position for the final seven games of the season. He has coached numerous All-American and all-conference players while also being named a conference coach of the year.

“I am honored to have been given this opportunity,” Huisman said. “I heard nothing but the highest of praises for Coach Barclay and what his program stands for from people that I hold in the highest regard both as coaches and as Christian leaders. I am excited to bring my experience from different roles at all different levels of college basketball to this program.

“My family and I feel very blessed to be here in Charleston as a part of the Buccaneer family.”

Charleston Southern begins its season November 6 and plays games against such schools as North Carolina State, Wake Forest, South Carolina, Loyola Chicago and North Carolina. They are part of the Big South Conference, where they have won four tournament and four season titles, the last of which came in 2015.

Starting at $3.46/week.
