Jess Howard found out a lot about her team on Monday night.

In front of a pack “Pink Out” crowd to raise awareness for breast cancer, the Webster City volleyball squad won a tight match with North Central Conference foe Clear Lake.

The Lynx (10-8 overall) went up early on the Lions (8-10) with 25-23 and 25-21 victories. Clear Lake answered with a 25-23 win, but Webster City closed out the match in a 26-24 Game 4 triumph.

“We did a great job of blocking out the noise of the loud crowd and staying focused rather than being distracted,” Howard said. “We had a lot of people come out for a great cause. The girls played well in a night that was, first and foremost, about breast cancer awareness.”

Webster City was able to prevail in the three sets by a combined point spread of just eight points The Lynx rallied trailing at 20 and 22 in a couple of the sets, but were able to stay strong for the victories.

“We handled the adversity and the pressure well,” Howard said. “We were able to stay within striking distance before rallying and pulling through.”

Cloe Savitski had 27 digs and Adeline Tesdahl dug out 16 balls for Webster City. Delainey Bargfrede notched 28 assists, while Ava Peterson added 17.

On the offensive side of the ball, Olivia Gallentine was 30-for-33 attacking with 17 kills. Tesdahl was 23 of 29 with nine kills, and Marissa Hedeen was 15-for-20 with nine kills.

Bargfrede went 15-for-22 and Addilyn Orton was 7 of 13. Addison Poppen was 8-for-10 with five kills.

Gallentine and Tesdahl recorded two blocks each.

On the service line, Bargfrede was 18-for-19 with two aces. Peterson finished 11 of 12, while Addyson Beaulieu was 14-for-15 with two aces.

Hedeen was 17 of 18 serving, and Poppen was perfect in nine tries.

“It was truly a team effort,” Howard said. “We were able to beat a good team with one of the state’s best hitters in Xada Johnson at the net. For the most part, we kept her contained.

“Our back row defense and front row blockers were strong.”

The Lynx are back in action on Saturday at the Madrid tournament.
