SPENCER — For the third time in the last four years, the Webster City football team dominated Spencer, posting a 34-7 victory here Friday night.
Jaxon Cherry continued his assault on the school’s record books, rushing for 321 yards and five touchdowns on 30 carries as the Lynx moved to 2-0 on the year. The senior now has 587 yards and eight TDs on the season.
Cherry scored once in the first, three times in the second and once more in the fourth. Keegan Hisler added 67 yards and Cael Nixon 30 to finish off a 52-attempt, 418-yard team rushing performance.
“Our offensive line did a great job playing against a loaded box of an always-tough Spencer defense,” WCHS head coach Bob Howard said. “Jaxon broke a long run on the first possession but the second possession started on our own 7-yard line and we were able to go 93 yards in 19 plays while taking 10 minutes off the clock.
“We cleaned up the ball handling and fumbles from last week with no fumbles or mishandled plays in the backfield and only one procedure penalty.”
Cherry also had a fumble recovery, a sack and 6.5 tackles while Josh Stansfield recorded two sacks and recovered a pair of fumbles for the Lynx defense, which held Spencer (0-2) to under 200 total yards of offense.
“Spencer is always a tough preparation, running the option,” Howard said. “Defensively, we did our assignments on all but a few plays, focusing on taking away the inside runs and trying to force the ball outside.
“Our interior linemen, Brandon Lahr, Josh Stansfield, Beau Nohrenberg along with Eli Estlund did a great job inside. Cael Nixon and Jayden Weinzetl were very active coming off the edges and Cherry, Luke Estlund and Keegan Hisler were tough on the perimeter. Also, Trevyn Lyons had a great game at corner.”
Cherry, coming off a season in which he ran for 1,804 yards and scored 31 touchdowns, now has 3,455 yards and 60 TDs in his career. He moved past Keagan Parks for second on the school charts, sitting only behind the 3,643 yards rushing by Gavin Dinsdale for first.
“Jaxon has grown physically from last year,” Howard said. “He is stronger, bigger and faster. He doesn’t need much of a crack to explode through and he’s reading blocks well. He’s a load to tackle inside and hard to catch in the open field.
“Nearly as important to the offense is Keegan at spinback and Cael at wingback. They should both continue to get better as they get more experience at their new positions.”
Webster City now focuses in on North Polk this coming Friday night at Lynx Field.
“We got better last week in practice, now, we must step is up another notch,” Howard said. “They throw the ball well and have excellent skill kids so it will be another tough prep for our defense.”
