Hawks reach finals at Perry tournament
South Hamilton volleyball squad rallies before bowing out vs. Earlham
PERRY — The South Hamilton volleyball team went 2-2 during action at the Perry Tournament recently, reaching the championship round of the event.
The Hawks picked up wins over host Perry and Nodaway Valley, falling twice to Earlham, including a second time in the finals to place second overall.
“We again started off slow against Earlham and they took us in two sets,” South Hamilton head coach Shannon Skartvedt said. “However, I challenged the girls after that match as we didn’t play to our potential. I told them that we wanted to play Earlham again in the championship match and we did just that.
“They worked hard together and managed to see them again. We played them much tighter but just didn’t pull out the win. I can see improvements in their skills, confidence and mental toughness in each game so that is exciting.”
In a two-set sweep over Perry, Claire Hewitt and Tanna Thompson each recorded three kills, with Tessa Skartvedt, Ashlyn Erickson and Sara Scheller picking up two each.
Thompson had 10 assists and nine digs, Grace Neuberger had eight digs with a block and Erickson had six digs. South Hamilton was 36-for-40 serving with eight aces, including four by Thompson.
The three-set victory over Nodaway Valley saw Skartvedt and Neuberger each record six kills with Thompson picking up 13 assists and nine digs. Kailyn Northrop had 10 digs and both Skartvedt and Erickson had six block assists.
Neuberger had five total kills in the two losses to Earlham.
South Hamilton played Greene County at home on Thursday night.
