With any sports team, the goal is to catch fire toward the end of the season. That is exactly what the Webster City softball team had captured as of late.
Since dropping three at the Martensdale-St. Marys Tournament on June 17, the Lynx have won six of their last seven games — including a 6-4 victory over Eagle Grove last Thursday at Greenwood Park in Eagle Grove before trouncing Hampton-Dumont-CAL via a 11-1 result in five innings for their North Central Conference finale at Lynx Field in Webster City.
The Lynx were slated to take care in the Carlisle Softball Classic last Saturday, but stayed home, as inclement weather and conditions nixed the weekend showcase.
The purple and gold improved to 16-15 overall and finished at 11-3 within the NCC.
Webster City had built up a 6-0 lead on Eagle Grove, before clamping down on an Eagle rally that started in the bottom of the sixth inning.
“We played really well for most of the game,” said Brad VanDeer, WCHS softball coach. “We had one inning where we lost our focus and gave up too much. Eagle Grove took advantage of our miscues and put the pressure on. They are a good team, so it’s nice to see that we can rebound from a bad inning and finish the game.”
“But, it is also a reminder that good teams will take advantage of any let up,” VanDeer added. “We will use this as a late season reminder and learning experience as we head into postseason play.”
Against Hampton-Dumont-CAL, the Lynx established a 5-0 lead and never looked back.
Before the victory, the Lynx honored seniors Chloe Andersen, Trinity Griffith and Livia Kasch for their contributions to the program.
“We were very good on both sides,” Van Deer said. “We were locked down defensively and we were swinging the bat with a purpose. It was nice to see everything come together on the last conference game and a good last home game for our seniors. (Andersen), (Griffith) and (Kasch) have put a lot of work into, not only softball, but also Webster City athletics as a whole. I’m happy for them that their last home game went our way.”
Junior hurler Delainey Bargfrede continued to elevate her game from within the circle, compiling 12 strikeouts and allowing just four hits in both games. At the plate, Bargfrede smacked five singles, reeled in an RBI and stole one base.
Sophomore Breanna Bahrenfuss lifted the Lynx with two hits and two RBIs against the Eagles, while junior Addy Tesdahl went 2-of-3 with a double and four RBIs.
